A-1 Team Entered Victory Lane for the Second Night in a Row

Kilgore, Texas (March 20, 1999) - Lone Star Speedway hosted the second of two nights of Southern United Professional Racing (SUPR) Dirt Late Model action and just like the night before Ronny Adams drove his A-1 Auto Salvage GRT into victory lane.  The victory was made all the more memorable for the A-1 team as Duke Whiseant drove the second A-1 car home in second.  Whiseant started the 40-lap feature from the pole and led the first 4 laps before Adams took advantage of a slight bobble coming off of turn 2 to grab the lead on lap 5.  Once out front, Adams was able to maintain a small but steady lead over Whiseant while battles were waged throughout the field.  The hottest battle was for third as first Marlon Wild held the position and then Howard Willis grabbed it for good by lap 15.  Doug Ingalls raced side by side with Willis but had to settle for fourth just ahead of Frye.

Adams gave credit to his teammate in victory lane.   “He was quick.  I don’t think I could have gotten around him if he hadn’t made that little bobble up there.  I’m teaching him too much.”   Adams continued, “It’s been a long lean winter, it’s always good to fatten up real quick. It’ll be a nice week at the shop.”

Duke felt that the late race cautions slowed his efforts to pass Adams. “I think if we wouldn’t had that caution there we would have had a better race at the end.  I’m still happy with second.”  As for the pass
for the lead Whiseant stated, “I pushed coming off the corner there and that’s what killed me.  After I got it off that push, I caught right back up with (Adams) and we was right there together the whole race.”

Howard Willis was running his first race with a new car and was happy with the performance.  “It done pretty good until I hit this big old rut over here on the restart at that must have bent a shock or something. We kind of went south then, but it drives good.”  Despite this small problem Willis was able to hold off Doug Ingalls who was hurt by the late race caution.  “I didn’t need the caution.  I was running a little bit harder tire and when the caution come out it cooled my tire.  It just didn’t seem to want to re-fire after that.”

Saturday’s victory moved Ronny Adams up to third in SUPR career victories with 20 wins and places Ronny atop the 1999 SUPR point standings.   In addition, Adams is in a good position to claim the $1000 Larry Stiles bonus offered to the high point man during Lone Star’s 4 SUPR race weekends.

Donald Watson claimed the Lloyd Wild Jr. Logging Hard Charger award after a broken oil pump belt forced him to start from the rear of the 22-car field.  He gained 12 positions in the feature to finish 9th to
earn the award.
