_ Wild "chug-a-lugs" to SUPR checkers in Little Rock

By Steve Molnar

LITTLE ROCK, AR (April 30, 1999) - Marlon Wild of Denham Springs, La. started on the pole and led all 20 laps at I-30 Speedway to claim his first Southern United Professional Racing (SUPR) Late Model victory of the year. Wild, who finished second after leading 38 of 40 laps at the last SUPR race at Jackson Motor Speedway, left no doubt tonight as he dominated the feature.

Wild said the Lloyd Wild Jr./Art’s Automotive Bullitt was great.

"I just stayed on the bottom and held my line and nobody tried me, so I just kept chug-a-lugging," Wild said. "It picked up a little bit of a push but that was when I got behind some other cars but it was okay. I seen that two to go (flag) and I wasn’t too worried about it."

Wild earned the GRT Top Qualifier award to earn the pole for the feature. He quickly pulled out to a solid lead on the first start only to see the caution wave as Tommy Surrett got loose in turn 4 and was collected by several cars. Surrett and Donnie Barnhart were finished for the night while Randy Cook made repairs and returned to the track two laps down.

On the second start, Rusty Cummings used his outside front row position to grab the lead on the start but he saw his chances for victory soon go south as he lost his brakes.

"Going into three and four I ran in there real hard and when I jammed the brakes they went to the floor," Cummings said. "It sheered a bolt on the brake bracket and that sheered the brake line."

Cummings tried to stay out on the track but soon parked his car for the night.

Wild came around to lead lap one while Eric Courville and current SUPR points leader David Ashley battled for second. Courville and Ashley’s battle would continue throughout the feature with Courville prevailing. Bubba Mullins put in a strong performance to finish fourth after starting tenth while Duke Whiseant started sixteenth and charged all the way up to fifth.

Jay Blair of Angie, La., who started 21st, earned the Lloyd Wild Jr. Logging Hard Charger Award as he passed 11 cars enroute to a tenth place finish. Heat winners were Wild, Cummings, Courville, Dennis Duncan and Ashley with Donnie Barnhart and Keith Craft claiming the last chance wins. Thirty late models were on hand.
