Siegert shines in Sabine SUPR show

By Steve Molnar

MANY, LA (May 29, 1999) - The O'Reilly's SUPR tour paid their first visit of 1999 to Sabine Raceway and rookie sensation 'Diamond' Dave Siegert copped his first ever O'Reilly's SUPR victory and he did so in convincing fashion as he led all 40-laps to claim the win.

Siegert, who has been in the top five in O’Reilly’s SUPR points since the beginning of the season and has been a consistent front runner, was able to power away from the field right from the start of the race. Siegert, of Mesquite, Texas selected a soft tire compound for his Barthold Tires GRT and he used it to build a full straightaway lead on the field by the halfway mark.

Lee Davis, who had been running 4th, then jumped to the highside and charged up to 2nd in just 2 laps. He began to close in on Siegert but ran out of laps, trailing Siegert by a half straightaway at the checkers. Ronny Adams followed Davis to the highside and finished 3rd ahead of local favorite Stacy Veuleman and Mark Andrews.

The race was slowed 3 times for cautions in the early going for incidents on the track with the worst altercation being a lap 4 wreck between the cars of Steve Latson and Jon Mitchell that eliminated both drivers. Once the cars were removed from the racetrack, the remainder of the race was run caution free.

Siegert was the GRT Top Qualifier as he started 4th in his heat and charged to the win. Other heat winners were Veuleman, Ashley and Davis. Last Chance winners were Jody Prince and Duke Whiseant.

Jeff Chanler qualified for the show in his heat race but left the track before the feature as he bent a valve in his engine. This allowed the first alternate Jay Blair into the show. He took full advantage of the starting spot as he moved from 20th to 8th and claimed the Lloyd Wild Jr. Logging Hard Charger Award.

The O'Reilly's Southern United Professional Racing (SUPR) Dirt Late Models were rained out at Thunder Valley Speedway in Glenmora, LA and have been rescheduled for Sunday June 6th. The gates open at 11:00 a.m. and the racing starts at 2:00 p.m. Also this weekend, the O'Reilly's SUPR race at Boothill Speedway was rained out but a new race date has not been set as of yet.
