Mullins scores in Sabine SUPR Series stop

MANY, LA (July 2, 1999) - The O’Reilly’s Southern United Professional Racing (SUPR) Late Model Series celebrated the founding of our great Nation with a three holiday weekend swing through Louisiana. The action got underway at Sabine Speedway and Bubba Mullins drove the United Rentals/Miss Cues II/Shelton Automotive/Murco/Holder Racing Engines GRT to victory. This was Mullins’ second ever SUPR victory and it came at the wheel of David and Sheila Cloud’s Red Rocket.

"I crashed my car over there at Kilgore and they stepped up to the plate," said Mullins.

Mullins topped a three-car battle for the lead that saw Lee Davis riding the highside of the track and Bubba and Rusty Cummings racing down low. The battle went on throughout the race and started with Mullins grabbing the lead on the start while Davis stormed the highside to grab second. Cummings moved into the top 3 on lap 4 and grabbed second on lap 17. Rusty then made his move grabbing the lead down low on lap 21 but the caution waved when Dave Siegert slowed with an expired motor and the move was negated. While Cummings continued to run up front, he was not able to get back into the lead.

"I think we had a little bit harder tire on the right rear," Cummings admitted. "It takes a little bit longer to get going after the cautions and that’s what kind of killed us."

When the racing restarted, Mullins adjusted his line to keep Cummings in check but then Davis remounted a charge up high that saw him take the lead from Mullins on lap 28. While Lee was able to grab the lead running up high, he was unable to maintain the pace up high.

"The car got real bad tight coming off of the corner," said Mullins. "I had to get off the throttle to keep from getting into the wall and that’s what helped him get back the lead."

Mullins held his line and retook the lead for good on lap 33. Davis fell back and was passed by Cummings on lap 39.

Thirty-one Late Models were on hand and Lee Davis was the GRT Top Qualifier. Steve Latson’s crew helped him win the tire changing contest to earn the pole for the feature but he was unable to take advantage of the starting spot and faded back before falling out of the race. Heat winners were Chris Cassano, Davis, Mullins, Cummings and Latson while Ronny Adams and Rob Litton claimed the Last Chance wins. Jon Mitchell started 20th and worked his way up to 7th to earn his first Lloyd Wild Jr. Logging Hard Charger award.
