O'Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Series Launched!

Baton Rouge, Louisiana (January 16, 2002) - Southern United Professional Racing and O’Reilly Auto Parts are pleased to announce the launch of the O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Series.  The O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars will compete throughout Louisiana and Mississippi in 2002 with the inaugural race slated for April 5th at Simpson County Motorsports Park in D’Lo, Mississippi.  The O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Series will be based at Baton Rouge Raceway and is tentatively slated to compete at Boothill Speedway, Jackson Motor Speedway, Pike County Speedway and Simpson County in 2002.

According to Greg Holmes, President of SUPR, “The O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Series was created to help bring sprint car racing to the forefront in the Gulf South at affordable level.”  To that end, the SUPR Sprint Car competitors can opt for the affordable SUPR spec motor package that is utilized by many competitors on the SUPR Late Model circuit.  And while the series aims to keep the cost of racing down, the O’Reilly Sprint Cars Series competitors will vie for a $7,500 event purse with the winner pocketing $1,200.  In addition, the Championship Point Fund is expected to top $10,000.

The O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Series arose out of a call for proposals by the Cajun Sprinters Association.  SUPR officials took a hard look at the state of sprint car racing in the Gulf South and elected to prepare a package for the association to consider.  The CSA leadership elected not to accept the SUPR proposal but SUPR was soon approached by a majority of the association’s drivers about implementing the proposal. SUPR officials then met with the drivers group a second time and based on the level of interest and support expressed by the drivers for the SUPR proposal, the decision was made to launch the O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Series.

Title sponsorship for the SUPR Sprint Car Series is provided by O’Reilly Auto Parts.  Brodix, Jimmy Smith Racing Tires and Trailer World have come on board as sponsors for the 2002 season.

Mike Donahoe of Jackson, Mississippi has been appointed as Race Director for the O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Series.  Donahoe, who has served as a crewmember on the Majestic Metals Late Model of Larry Ritter, has also worked as an official for the O’Reilly SUPR Late Model Series prior to his appointment as the O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Series Race Director.  Greg Holmes will serve as the President for both SUPR Series.

Rule Books will shortly be available for distribution at the O'Reilly SUPR offices.
