Herrington
backs up his word with O'Reilly SUPR Sprint victory!
Baton
Rouge, Louisiana (April 6, 2002) - After finishing in second place to
Butch David last night at Simpson County Motorsports Park, Michael
Herrington Jr. had one last parting word, "we'll get Butch tomorrow
night." Herrington did
just that, passing David with 4 laps to go after a great side-by-side
battle over the last half of the race. David held on for second with Glynn
LeBlanc winning his own personal battle with Harold Henderson for 3rd.
Henderson finished 4th with Wendell Magnon rounding out the top 5.
After
the race when reminded of his boast from the night before Herrington’s
response was a quick, “I told you so!”
Herrington felt his car got better as the race went on
“We started third and I got in line behind (front-row starters,
David and Glynn LeBlanc) and I felt I had something for them.
At the end, David was getting loose and I wanted him to see me a
few times down low.” And
while Mike joked about getting even with David, he was quick to add,
“he’s tough”. An
acknowledgement of the challenge he and all the O’Reilly SUPR Sprint
Cars face when they race David. David
felt he had a car capable of winning once again tonight but as the race
wore on a part failure hurt his chances of a repeat victory. “My right front torsion bar broke and when it did, it lost
all of its forward bite. When
that happens you can only go so fast”, David added.
“I wanted to win both but I’ll take a first and a second.” Glynn
LeBlanc once again had a good run in his SUPR spec motor powered sprinter.
LeBlanc started on the outside pole and battled with Harold
Henderson for much of the night finally easing away from Henderson with a
low side pass in turn 3. LeBlanc
is exited with his new motor package, “it’s working.
We’re still getting the kinks worked out but we’re getting
there. It still needs more
gear.” 12
O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars were on hand.
Mike Herrington aced the first heat race with Butch David claiming
the second heat. In top 6
qualifiers then faced off in a 6-lap dash that features an inverted start. David was able to power his way to the pole position for the
feature as he made a late charge to get by Glynn LeBlanc, who started on
the pole. Terry Vidrine once
again claimed the Wynn’s Hard Charger award as he passed 5 cars en route
to a 6th place finish. Official
