Magnolia State Championships get underway!

Baton Rouge, LA (April 19, 2002) - The O’Reilly SUPR Late Model’s will continue a busy stretch of April with a visit to Pike County Speedway for the first of three events that make up the Magnolia State Championships.  The Magnolia State Championship is guaranteed a starting spot in the season-ending Jambalaya 100, now in its sixth season.

Last year Springfield, Louisiana’s Marlon Wild claimed the title.  Wild, a two-time winner in weekly competition this year at Pike County is expected to be on hand seeking to defend his 2001 Magnolia State Championship.  Wild competes at Pike County Speedway in between O’Reilly SUPR Late Model events.  Wild is pursuing the 2002 O’Reilly SUPR Late Model Championship and currently resides in fifth place, just 19 points out of second place.  Wild has recorded a season high finish of 4th place finish at Baton Rouge Raceway but he has finished no worse than 13th place in the first six O’Reilly SUPR Late Model events this year.

Wild, like everyone else on the circuit is pursuing Rodney Wing, current point leader.  Wing recorded his first O’Reilly SUPR victory of the year at Baton Rouge Raceway.  He’s recorded five top five finishes and finished in the top ten of each SUPR event in this young season.  The Meridian, Mississippi driver has visited victory circle at Pike County Speedway, wining two O’Reilly SUPR events at Pike County in 2001 and the 4th annual version of the Jambalaya 100 in 2000.

Second place in the championship point chase is a tie between a pair of Louisiana drivers, 1999 O’Reilly SUPR Champion David Ashley of Zachary and the hard charging Ryan Plaisance of Westwego.  Ashley’s season has been a bit of a roller coaster ride as he started off with a pair of solid runs in the Mardi Gras Nationals at Pike County.  He then struggled at Lone Star Speedway, dropping out of the feature on the very first lap and then dropped out early at Baton Rouge Raceway with a small oil fire.  He rebounded last weekend with a second place finish at Memphis Motorsports Park on Friday night and a third place finish the next night at I-30 Speedway.  Plaisance is coming off his best finish of the year as he recorded a runner-up finish last Saturday night at I-30 Speedway.  Plaisance has shown a knack for working his way to the front of the pack, recording two Lloyd Wild Jr. Logging Hard Charger awards for passing the most cars in a feature event.

Last week, 2001 Late Model America/B&K Underground/Ashley Brothers Rookie of the Year Odie Green finally got his season on track winning at I-30 Speedway for the second time in his career.  Green’s victory moved him up to 11th in the point standings and it was a timely win as he was carrying the colors of new sponsor Directional Services Inc. for the first time last weekend.

2001 Pike County Speedway Champion Sam Patrick has switched to the traveling series this year and he is a solid 7th place in the point standings, himself just 28 points behind Ashley and Plaisance in the standings.  Another familiar face to the Pike County fans is just behind Patrick and that is the 2002 Mardi Gras Nationals champion, Kenny Merchant.  Merchant won both legs of the Mardi Gras Nationals and the Ruston, Louisiana competitor has won 4 of the last 5 O’Reilly SUPR races at Pike County with a third place finish thrown in for good measure.

Come join us at Pike County Speedway where the racing comes alive at I-55.  The gates will open at 4:00 p.m. with the racing starting at 7:30 p.m.  A full slate of local action will be included featuring the UMP Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and Super Stocks.  For additional information call the Pike County Speedway office at (601) 684-9230 or the O'Reilly SUPR office at (225) 275-5040.
