Baton
Rouge, LA (April 24, 2002) - Much like death and taxes, rainouts are an
unwelcome reality of racing. The
March 30th event scheduled for Boothill Speedway was the latest victim and
now the O'Reilly SUPR Late Model officials and Boothill Speedway have
agreed to reschedule the event on Saturday night April 27, 2002.
The make-up event will
become the 8th stop on the 2002 Championship circuit and it
will become another opportunity for David Ashley to continue his recent
hot streak that has seen he grabbed hold of second place in the point
standings. Ashley has
recorded a second place, a third place and a win in the last three
O’Reilly SUPR events and in the process, moved from 9th place
to second place in the championship point’s chase.
Ashley, driving the Thornhill Wrecker/Benny’s Car Wash/Ace
Pallets and Storage/J&J Motorsports Keith Craft powered Chevrolet
Monte Carlo Larry Shaw still has a long way to go to catch current point
leader Rodney Wing. Rodney Wing has set a
blistering pace through the first seven races recording one victory, a
pair of runner-up finishes, three fifth place finishes and a ninth place
finish. This pace has allowed
Wing to build up a 114-point lead over Ashley and the rest of the
O’Reilly SUPR competitors. Wing
will be seeking his first victory at Boothill Speedway in his B&K
Underground/Boland Performance/Styling Signs and Decals Keith Craft
powered Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rocket.
Boothill is a track that Wing has only run one once before when he
competed in the September second event in his rookie season in 2000.
Wing dropped out early with mechanical trouble and finished 21st.
Wing’s participation at Boothill was limited by three consecutive
rainouts in 2000. Rookie pilot James Ward
will be competing at Boothill Speedway for the first time but he hasn’t
shown a shyness about charging to the front of the pack on new race tracks
and barring some minor misfortunes, Ward may well have claimed his first
victory of the year in the Westbank Racing Wall 2 Wall Performance
Engines-powered Chevrolet Monte Carlo GRT out of the Crowe racing stable. Marlon Wild, the veteran
of the pack, has recorded 6 O’Reilly SUPR victories on a wide-variety of
racetracks in his career but he has yet to visit victory lane at Boothill
Speedway. Wild’s best
finish at Boothill was during the last O’Reilly SUPR event at Boothill
Speedway in June of 2001. Wild
finished in third place despite the lack of brakes on his car.
That race was won by 2001 SUPR Rookie of the Year Odie Green.
Green has struggled in 2002 but he did find his way into victory
lane at I-30 Speedway on April 13th. Ryan Plaisance has had a
roller coaster season, struggling at times but also recording some solid
runs, including a pair of Lloyd Wild Jr. Logging Hard Charger awards for
passing the most cars in a feature event.
Plaisance’s best finish of the year in his Plaisance Appraisal
Service/Down South Finishing Charters/Sumners Engraving Wall 2 Wall
powered Chevrolet Monte Carlo Warrior was a runner-up finish to Odie Green
at I-30 Speedway and a third place finish at Baton Rouge Raceway.
Plaisance has been as high a second place in points but currently
resides in fifth place, a position he hopes to improve upon at Boothill
Speedway. And while none of the top
five competitors in the 2002 point standings have visited victory lane at
Boothill Speedway, Jon Mitchell, currently sixth in the championship point
standings, recorded his first-ever O’Reilly SUPR victory at the first
event at Boothill in 2001. Mitchell
from nearby Texarkana, Texas had a break out year in 2001, winning two
O’Reilly SUPR events in limited competition and he has joined the tour
full-time in 2002, recording four top ten finishes in the first seven
events in the J&J Motorsports/Pannell Motorsports/W&W Timber
Kenneth’s High Performance powered Chevrolet Monte Carlo GRT. One driver who is quite
accustomed to victory lane at Boothill Speedway is Ronny Adams.
Adams from Greenwood, Louisiana has recorded 6 O’Reilly SUPR
victories at the 3/8th mile facility a numerous track
championships. Adams, now
driving the C. Wrights Machine Tool/Wilhelm
Auto R.L. Nealy powered Pontiac
Grand Prix GRT, fell just 2 laps shy of securing his 27th
O’Reilly SUPR victory when a dropped valve allowed Rodney Wing to sneak
by for the win. Adams will be
well prepared for the competition this weekend, having claimed two wins in
weekly competition at Boothill this year. The
other winner in 2001 in O’Reilly SUPR competition at Boothill Speedway
was Chad Dupont. Dupont drove
an unsponsored PTS Racing Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo Warrior to a big
victory at the O’Reilly NCRA/SUPR Challenge.
Dupont has yet to compete in O’Reilly SUPR competition this year
but he’s expected to be on hand leading a host of local competitors that
has recently included Ricky and Jason Ingalls, Jerry Jackson, 2001 track
champion Teddy Gray and Lee Davis. The Open Wheel Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, Trucks and Mini Stocks will join the O’Reilly SUPR Late Models in action this Saturday night at Boothill Speedway. The gates will open at 4:00 p.m. and the racing will get underway at 7:30 p.m. Boothill Speedway is located west of Shreveport on I-20 to Exit #3, then north .2 miles, then east on McGee Road.
