Tommy Surrett collects Southwest Arkansas Payoff

Murfreesboro, Arkansas (June 1, 2002) - Perseverance does indeed payoff.  Thus were the sentiments of Tommy Surrett of Little Rock, Arkansas upon winning his first ever O’Reilly SUPR Late Model feature.  Surrett rallied from his 10th starting position to take the lead on lap 20 from Ryan Plaisance.  Then he had to fight off a late charge from Kenny Merchant to take the win.  Surrett, driving the Ronald Surrett Contracting/JS Construction/Lando Patton Jay Dickens powered Ford Mustang Rocket summed up his evening by stating, “Sooner or later it pays off.  It’s about time.”

Surrett used the high side of the track to work his way to the front, catching and passing Ryan Plaisance by lap 20 and then pulling away to a sizeable lead before Kenny Merchant began to reel him in.  Merchant, the winner of both O’Reilly SUPR Late Model features at Southwest Arkansas Super Speedway last year appeared to be ready to claim yet another victory this year. Merchant actually grabbed the top spot for two laps near the finish, leading laps 47 and 48 before Surrett reverted back to the high side and stormed back into the lead as the pair raced around lapped traffic.

Jon Mitchell ran amongst the top 5 all afternoon and made a late charge to move by Ryan Plaisance to grab third place.  Plaisance slipped back to 4th place but did record his third straight 4th place finish this time ahead of Rob Litton, who rounded out the top 5.

David Ashley had a rough night turn even tougher as he was forced into his backup car, the #7 that had been entered by Donald Watson when Randy Cook couldn’t make the trip.  Ashley damaged his car earlier in the night and he was in the wrong spot in the feature when Keith Craft suffered a part failure.  Craft’s car took a hard right turn right into the path of Ashley.  Ashley made hard contact with Craft sending him into a roll and off the track at the end of the backstretch.  Both drivers were okay but both cars were in need of major repair work.

31 O’Reilly SUPR Late Models were on hand.  Ryan Plaisance, Kenny Merchant, Dale Hurley, Dwight Falcon and Jon Mitchell claimed the heat race victories with Rodney Wing and Shane McCloud logged the last chance wins.  Ryan Plaisance was the B&K Underground Top Qualifier award and Odie Green started 22nd and passed 15 cars to claim the Lloyd Wild Jr. Logging Hard Charger award.
