Michael Herrington tops O'Reilly SUPR Sprints at
Jackson Motor Speedway
Jackson, Mississippi (June 23, 2002) - The first ever visit to Jackson Motor Speedway by the O'Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Series proved to be an exciting and successful event for everyone involved, with Michael Herrington topping the full field of very quick winged warriors.
Herrington
blasted through turns one and two in the cushion past fellow front row
starter Harold Henderson, who found himself faced with wheel to wheel
opposition from Cassidy Lejeune. Herrington wasted no time in
putting the # 7 Trailer World Eagle chassied car in the wind, building a
sizeable advantage by lap 10. Fifth
starting SUPR series points leader Butch David then began to make some
noise, going to work on Lejune for third with Henderson closing on
Herrington, who had run into considerable lapped traffic. Henderson
moved to the rear bumper of the Jay Dickens powered machine of Herrington,
just as Herrington made a dazzling three wide move down the backstretch to
clear the lapped cars. Henderson found himself at the mercy of the
lapped traffic, until fate stepped in, nearly ending his night. The
# 46 Tony Krittes spun entering turn one, collecting the # 68 of Terry
Vidrine as Henderson bored down on them at full throttle. Henderson
spun to avoid the wreckage but became a part of it when another competitor
was unable to stop and slid into the # 11H Napa / Henderson Racing
Gambler. Henderson was forced to leave the track to replace a flat
right rear while the cars were untangled from a mess that also saw the #
21 of David stopped on the track. Herrington
resumed his torrid pace up front with Lejeune sailing along in second as
the # 9 of Billy Gunter quietly slipped into third from a back of the pack
starting position. Gunter used the moisture left on the extreme
bottom of the racing surface to mount a charge through the field,
eventually rolling into second behind Herrington at the finish to earn the
Wynn's Hard Charger award. Lejeune held on for third ahead of
Henderson and David, who mounted mad charges through the field from the
rear to get back to the top five. Glynn
LeBlanc recovered from a night of seemingly never ending troubles to score
sixth with Cody Hall in seventh ahead of Krittes, Herman Carrier, and Mark
Tate. Herrington
was quick to praise his sponsor during post race inspection, stating
"I've got to thank Trailer World - they've helped me a lot this year,
and SUPR for giving us this deal to run. The Jay Dickens motor was
real good and I've raced here before so that helped." Herrington made the most of his opportunity this night, moving into a tie for series wins with David, and gaining some ground on David in the points chase 2002 SUPR points chase.
