Many,
Louisiana - (July 6, 2002) Tommy
Surrett continues to scorch the SUPR trail this summer as he grabbed the
lead from Jason Ingalls on lap two and didn’t looked back over the next
48 laps to win at Sabine Raceway Saturday night.
It was Surrett’s fourth O’Reilly Auto Parts SUPR Late Model win
of the season, second in a row and
third in the last four SUPR events
in the Lando Patton/Daniels
Family/Ronald Surrett Contracting Keith Craft-powered Ford Mustang Rocket.
Surrett claimed the B&K
Underground Top Qualifier pole position by winning the first heat from the
fourth starting position and Ingalls duplicated that feat in heat two to
start outside the front row. Jason
was looking for his second straight SUPR top five of the weekend and
Sabine Raceway’s flawless two-grooved surface promised all the
competitors a chance at victory except Surrett had other plans.
Tommy grabbed the lead in turn two at the start but Ingalls moved
under the #27s in turns three and four to barely lead lap one.
Once on the outside though, Surrett’s Keith Craft SUPR spec motor
just powered away from the field. There
were just three cautions in the event and Surrett was up to the task each
time. Zachary,
Louisiana’s David Ashley concluded a strong weekend with a run from 12th
starting position to finish second which gave him two seconds and a third
to help gain a few points on series leader Rodney Wing of Meridian,
Mississippi. Wing also gained
ten positions in the feature after winning the second last chance
qualifier to start 18th. He
finished eighth for his second top ten in a row after winning at Baton
Rouge Raceway on Thursday night. Ashley’s
Thornhill Wrecker/Benny’s Car Wash/Ace Pallets and Storage/J&J
Motorsports Keith Craft powered Chevy Monte Carlo
Larry
Shaw was running eighth on a lap seven restart.
He began using the high groove around lap fifteen.
He passed Ronny Adams for seventh on lap eighteen, Kenneth Crowe
for sixth on lap twenty and a lap later he passed the May Sabine SUPR
winner, Kenny Merchant to reach the top five.
On the next lap, he passed Odie Green who wound up loosing
positions to Merchant and Adams on the same lap.
Ashley continued past a surprising Brock Williams of Leesville,
Louisiana for third on lap 26. On
lap twenty-eight, Ashley passed Ingalls for second and it appeared like he
might have something for Surrett if he could get a caution.
He got his wish when the nose piece came off of leading SUPR Rookie
of the Year candidate James Ward’s GRT however instead of challenging
Surrett on the restart, Ashley found himself dealing with a resurgent
Ingalls in the ABC Auto Parts GRT. Jason
fought back on the low side and reclaimed second with ten to go.
Meanwhile, Merchant who was racing with a missing motor all night,
had passed Williams on lap 32 for fourth and was closing in on the battle
for second with his J.D.
Caver/Goddard Performance/J&J Motorsports Keith Craft powered Ford
Mustang Warrior.
Despite the motor trouble, Merchant had won the fourth and final
heat in the 32-car field. Ingalls
suffered motor problems on lap 43 and ended a fine run in the infield.
Surrett was gone up front by then but the race for second was on
between Ashley and Merchant. The
pair ran side by side over the final three laps with Ashley getting the
spot by a fender length. Williams completed a career best SUPR run with a smooth driving performance and a fourth place finish in the Team GVS/Racer's Warehouse/Advance Auto Parts/Bar-S Towing Warrior after winning the third heat. It was quite an effort considering the team uses a wet sump system in a home-built SUPR spec motor. The water temperature was 245 degrees at the end of the fifty-lapper. Green rebounded from the earlier slip and battled with Adams for the fifth spot over the last twenty laps. The same pair were part of a race-long three-car duel for second at Sabine’s May SUPR race. This time, Green got the top five and Adams finished sixth in front of another fine performance by Crowe in seventh. Jon Mitchell and Rob Litton completed top ten runs behind Wing. Bill Gordon and Clint Baker capped off good nights by finishing 11th and 12th. Ward won the first last chance race. Ryan Plaisance had to use a provisional to make the race after being caught up in a wreck in his heat race. Marlon Wild used the other provisional. He borrowed Curt Lipsey’s #85 after having a motor go sour in hot laps with his first borrowed ride for the evening: Rodney Wing’s back-up car. Jeff Chanler also lost a motor in hot laps and did not get to compete. Official Results:
