O'Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars and Late Models back in action this weekend

Baton Rouge, Louisiana (July 15, 2002) - Louisiana race fans will get a rare opportunity to catch the O'Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars and the Late Models in action on the same weekend.  The Sprint Cars will kick off the action on Friday night with a return visit to Baton Rouge Raceway.  The Late Models will then pick up the action on Saturday when the return for the final time this year to Champion Park Speedway.

 

David Herrington, of Prairieville, Louisiana won the first time the O'Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars visited Baton Rouge Raceway and he is fresh off a win on July 6th Pike County.  But while Herrington leads the Sprint Cars with 4 victories, Butch David of Geismar, Louisiana continues to lead the standings in the battle for the inaugural O'Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars Championship.

 

David Ashley's victory at Lone Star Speedway Saturday night has allowed him to close to within 5 points of Rodney Wing in the battle for the 2002 O'Reilly SUPR Late Model Championship.  Ashley, from Zachary, Louisiana has now notched his third victory of the season and has finished in the top 4 in each of the last 6 races, including two victories.  Wing, from Meridian, Mississippi also has three victories to his credit, the last coming on July 4th at Baton Rouge Raceway.  More importantly, Wing has been able to maintain his hold on the lead by finishing in the top 10 in 19 of 21 races this season.

 

Kenny Merchant is tied with Tommy Surrett with 4 O'Reilly SUPR Late Model victories this year and a pair of third place finishes in the last two events has him just 95 points out of first place.  Surrett's recent hot streak has catapulted him into 9th place in the standings after being outside the top 15 early in the season.

 

The racing gets underway Friday night at Baton Rouge Raceway as the gates open at 5:00 p.m. and the races start at 8:00 p.m.  The O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars will be joined by local racing action including the UMP Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks and Yard Karts for the youngsters.  An exciting 25-lap O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car feature will cap the night at Baton Rouge Raceway.  Baton Rouge Raceway is located north of Baton Rouge in Baker, Louisiana.  Take I-110 north to exit 6, then 1 mile east on SR 408, then 6 miles north on SR 67. 

 

Saturday night the action shifts north to Champion Park Speedway in Doyline, Louisiana.  This will be the O’Reilly SUPR Late Models second visit to Champion Park this season.  Darren Patrick of Monroe, Louisiana claimed his first ever O’Reilly SUPR Late Model victory at Champion Park back in May.  The action gets underway at Champion Park when the gates open at 4:00 p.m. and the racing starts at 7:30 p.m.  Champion Park is located just off I-20 exit 38, Goodwill Road, North side of Interstate, east of exit.  For further information call the O’Reilly SUPR offices at 225-275-5040.
