Angelette stops the David/Herrington Gang at Baton Rouge
Baton Rouge, Louisiana (July 19, 2002) – Kelly Angelette ended at least for one night the reign of the David/Herrington gang as he started 8th and quickly worked his way to the front, taking the lead for good on lap 8 to take his first ever O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car feature at Baton Rouge Raceway. Angelette, the Top Qualifier, overcame an inversion of the top 8 cars and a surprising Cary Farmer to take the win in his first O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car feature. Angelette survived a late race scrape with the #8 car of Wendell Magnon that put out the Lafayette driver and damaged his car as well but he was able to hang on to take the win. “We had a good jump on the start, we took it easy went around some of the slower cars and the 3 car, hell he was out there. I had to run up there to try and catch him and he wasn’t very easy to pass. We had good luck, had a little misfortune with one of the lapped cars but we hung in there and survived.” Farmer took advantage of the inversion and he looked strong leading early despite the fact that he broke his shoulder at the Pike County O’Reilly SUPR Sprint show on July 6th. Farmer held steady until lapped traffic impeded his progress long enough to allow Angelette the opportunity to pull clear with the lead. As the race wore on, Farmer faded back to fifth, unable to keep the pace with his injured shoulder. “It was rough, painful. I had forgot about Kelly completely and he surprised me. The car was but I faded. The car was right on. We pretty much came just hoping to start the race and get out of everybody’s way but I felt good enough to race. We started for enough to the front that I had to to keep from getting run over.” Butch David and Michael Herrington Jr. both found themselves with a long way to go to get to the front tonight as David started at the rear and Herrington quickly joined him following a spin on the original start. Both drivers were able to work their way through the field to be in contention with Herrington reach second on lap 9. But Herrington would spin in turn 2 as he worked on cutting down the margin to Angelette’s car on lap 19. Herrington did an impressive job of keeping his car running through two complete spins and he resumed the battle from the fifth spot. Herrington climbed back to third at the checkers. “I had a run on them and I went up on the cushion and as soon as I got off the cushion down into the groove it just went out from under me. It was real slick and I was running hard, it was just one of those things.” David stated his intentions of earning the Wynn’s Hard Charger award during the driver introductions and he did just that, starting 15th and working his way to 2nd by lap 20 and holding the spot to the checkers. “We’ve been getting beat pretty bad lately so we worked on setup. We tried something but it didn’t work. It was running good. It was a little tight but I knew it would be but coming from the back, I knew what I had to do.” Cassidy Lejeune recorded another solid finish with the O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars as he finished fourth ahead of Farmer. Darrell Hyde recovered from a flip in his heat race to finish 6th ahead of Glynn LeBlanc, Terry Vidrine, Mark Roth and Tank Brashier. Chase Taylor traveled over from Montgomery, Texas to compete with the O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars for the first time and he won the first heat race but pulled into the infield early in the feature. Kelly Angelette and Michael Herrington Jr. won the other heat races. Feature: 1. Kelly Angelette 2. Butch David 3. Michael Herrington Jr. 4. Cassidy Lejeune 5. Cary Farmer 6. Darrell Hyde 7.
