Butch David claims the inaugural O'Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Championship

Baton Rouge, Louisiana (October 19, 2002) - Butch David clinched the first-ever O'Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Championship and he did so in fine style, snagging his second straight Louisiana State Championship in the process.

David claimed his sixth victory of the season and ended the championship point fight 54 points in front of Michael Herrington Jr. Herrington actually claimed more victories with 7 O'Reilly SUPR wins to his credit but it was David's consistency that helped clinch the title.

David felt proud to claim the O'Reilly SUPR Sprint title, "It was a tough season between me and Mike but we both had our eyes set on that deal and we both wanted it.  I left another organization as defending champion (Cajun Sprinter Association) and we wanted to prove our self over here.  I had a lot of controversy on that one so I wanted to prove I could beat Mike with any controversy.  It was nice to come back as the defending State Champion and win it again."

David dodged an early bullet as Kelly Angelette, the only driver to break up the David/Herrington victory circle juggernaut, dropped out prior to the green flag.  When the field went green, David shot to the lead but it was a 4-car battle for the lead with Harold Henderson Jr., Cassidy Lejeune and Michael Herrington Jr. running nose to tail.

As the race wore on it would be Herrington making the charge as first Lejeune (spin), and then Carrier (motor), would fall by the wayside.  Herrington, running the bottom, was able to make some ground on David and he was charge was only slowed by some untimely cautions that kept Herrington from reeling in David sooner.  Herrington was also faced with holding off a late charge by Shane Morgan.  Morgan made a late charge to make it a three-way battle for the lead despite a badly smoking motor.

But David was ready for that battle and held off Herrington and Morgan’s challenge to take the win and the 2002 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car title.  Herrington finished second followed by Morgan, Terry Vidrine and a rebounding Cassidy Lejeune.

A total of 18 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars were on hand with Butch David staking the pole in winning the first heat.  Harold Henderson and David Kountz took heats two and three.  Al Killebrew, who missed Friday night’s action and started on the rear, passed 8 cars to claim the Wynn’s Hard Charger award.
