4th Annual Mardi Gras Nationals - This Weekend!

Baton Rouge, Louisiana (February 25, 2003) – The parades are rolling in South Louisiana and that’s a good signal that it’s time for the 4th Annual Mardi Gras Nationals at Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Mississippi.  The 4th Annual Mardi Gras Nationals will be held this weekend, with 2 complete O’Reilly SUPR Late Model shows starting on Friday night February 28th with a 25-lap feature and wrapping up on Saturday night March 1st3rd with a 50-lap feature.

The 4th Annual Mardi Gras Nationals will kick off the 2003 O’Reilly SUPR Late Model Championship season and the battle for the championship should be heated with Rodney Wing returning as defending series champion.  Wing, From Meridian, Mississippi has had great during the Mardi Gras Nationals, sweeping both nights of racing in 2001 and recording a pair of runner-up finishes in 2002.  Wing will be fielding his own car this season with assistance from B&K Underground, Boland Performance and Styling Signs and Graphics and is expected to be on hand this weekend.  Wing has not yet committed to defending his title in 2003 but if he elects to do so, he’ll face a strong competition from 2000-2001 Champion Jay Blair of Angie , Louisiana and 1999 Champion David Ashley of Zachary , Louisiana .  Blair has stated his intention of pursuing the 2003 title while Ashley has made it clear his chasing wins in 2003 and then he’ll see where the chips fall in the title chase.

Two drivers to keep an eye out for are Kenny Merchant of West Monroe , Louisiana , winner of both legs of the Mardi Gras Nationals last year and Mike Boland of Cuba , Alabama , winner of the last two O’Reilly SUPR Late Model events held at Pike County Speedway, including the season-ending Jambalaya 100.

The gates will open at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday night, February 27th for an open practice session from 7:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. and then the racing will get underway on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The O’Reilly SUPR Late Models will run a complete program with heat races, last chance races and a 25-lap feature.  The O’Reilly SUPR Late Models will be joined by a full racing program for the Pure Stocks and UMP Modifieds on Friday night. The O'Reilly SUPR Late Models will return on Saturday with racing getting underway once again at 7:30 p.m. with a complete racing program for the Street Stocks, Super Stocks and O’Reilly SUPR Late Models with the night being capped by a 50-lap Late Model feature.
