Rob Litton makes it two-in-a-row with win at Pike County Speedway

McComb, Mississippi (June 28, 2003) – Rob Litton struck again winning his second straight O’Reilly SUPR Late Model feature, this time at Pike County Speedway.  Litton earned a $500 bonus posted by Wall 2 Wall Performance Engines to up his winnings to $3000 for the 50-lap victory.

Litton had a late start to the season but has been competitive from the very beginning but Litton credits his recent string of victories to the fact that he’s now running on the tracks for the second time and this has allowed him to tweak the combination on his new Rocket chassis.  “Everything we’ve learned all year, we’re finally coming to tracks again for the second time and that’s really helped a lot.  We’ve been lucky too.”

Litton chased down early leader Rodney Wing to take the lead on lap 8 and he never looked back and he should be glad he didn’t because a furious battle erupted behind him.  Rodney Wing hung tough early Jody Prince and Jay Blair also giving battle for position.  As the race moved past the halfway mark 22nd starting David Ashley emerged as a serious threat for the victory.  Ashley stormed the highside in turns 3 and 4 to slice through the top five and closing to within two feet of victory at the checkers.  Ashley earned the Lloyd Wild Jr. Logging Hard Charger award for his efforts.

Ashley felt he had the car to beat in the feature.  “We made a couple of changes for the feature and I think we hit it, I think we had the car to beat we just ran out of laps.”

Litton mentioned luck in his post race comments and part of that luck was having just enough fuel to reach the checkers as he felt a slight hesitation in fuel pickup with two laps to go and he backed it down just a bit and it almost cost him the race as Ashley was closing fast.

One driver not as fortunate as Litton was Robbie Starnes who saw a top five charge end early when he ran out of fuel with less than five laps to go.  Rodney Wing was another driver to experience difficulties as he lost power steering after five laps and had to fight his way to bring his racer home in sixth.

Jody Prince was methodical in moving up to third while Kenny Merchant snuck back by James Ward for fourth on the final lap with Ward finishing fifth.  Jon Mitchell finished a steady seventh with Jay Blair, the B&K Underground Top Qualifier, fading to eight after running in the top three most of the night.  Sam Patrick finished ninth ahead of Donald Watson who was the last car on the lead lap.

36 O’Reilly SUPR Late Models were on hand and five heat races were held with Jody Prince, Jon Mitchell, Rodney Wing, Chris Wall and Philip Cooper taking the wins.  Ryan Plaisance and Lester Bernidas won the last chance races to earn a transfer to the feature.
