David Ashley tops Devil's Bowl fireworks

Mesquite , Texas ( July 3, 2003 ) – David Ashley charged by Ronny Adams with two laps to go to take his second O’Reilly SUPR Late Model victory of the season.  Ashley, who has overcome a rough streak of poor finishes followed up a strong charge from the rear last week at Pike County with a big win at Devil’s Bowl in his Thornhill Wrecker/Ace Storage/Wyatt’s Collision Center Wall2Wall powered Chevrolet Monte Carlo Larry Shaw race car.

Ashley feels that the tide may be turning for the Cook Racing Team, “We had a very good run but we’ve had a good car consistently time and time again, we have not shown it.  This is everything that can go wrong goes wrong.  If I can get both ends of this thing tied together it’s not over yet, as far as us winning races.  I think there is more to come.”

Ronny Adams earned the B&K Underground Top Qualifier Award and started on the pole in his C. Wrights Machine/A-1 Auto Salvage Neely and Associates powered Pontiac Grand Prix GRT for the 40-lap feature.  Adams was able to hold a steady lead over fellow front row starter Doug Ingalls.  Ingalls held second until Ashley was able to power by near the mid point of the race. Ashley then began to slowly reel in Adams , closing in to battle for the lead over the last third of the race.  Adams worked his way through traffic and managed to hold Ashley off but as the 5 to go signal was given it was clear that Adams was beginning to fight a loose car.  Ashley was ready to make his move and with two laps to go, Adams slipped in turn one and Ashley jumped under Adams as they raced into turn 2.  Adams tried to squeeze back toward the bottom but Ashley was alongside when the pair made hard contact resulting in a flat left rear for Adams .  Adams managed to limp home in second but wasn’t happy with the results of the battle.

Jeff Chanler was steady in moving up through the field and picked off three or four spots in the closing stages of the race to finish third in his Luigi’s Restaurant/OWC Welding PTS powered Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rayburn.  Kenny Merchant again solidified his hold on the 2003 O’Reilly SUPR Late Model standings with a strong rally from 21st to 4th in the feature to claim the Lloyd Wild Jr. Logging Hard Charger award.  Merchant overcame some minor engine woes that slowed him in his heat race and forced him to use a provisional starting position but once the feature got underway Merchant was more than up to the task in his J.D. Caver/Bayou Fabricators/Goddard Performance Keith Craft-powered Ford Taurus Warrior.

Doug Ingalls fought fading tires but still managed a top five finish in his Nash Trucking/Ralo’s Marshall Lube & Auto PTS-powered Chevrolet Monte Carlo GRT.  Jon Mitchell, Trey Beene, Ryan Plaisance, Rob Litton and Keith Craft rounded out the top 10.

38 O’Reilly SUPR Late Models were on hand and the heat winners were John Mitchell, Doug Ingalls, David Ashley, Jason Ingalls and Keith Craft.  Ryan Plaisance and Michael Coleman then earned transfer spots with victories in the last chance races.
