David Ashley a Champ at Champion Park!
Ashley
started his night out on a strong note as he earned the B&K
Underground Top Qualifier award after starting his heat race in seventh
and charging to finish second behind Odie Green.
As a result, Ashley started on the pole with Rusty Cummings on the
outside pole. Ashley was able
to get the jump on Cummings and led the field through turn one on the
original start and once again following a turn one spin by Kenny Callison
that also collected Teddy Gray. Ashley
held a steady pace on the point in the early stages that were slowed by a
batch of early cautions but once the action settled down after a final
caution on lap 11, Ashley and Cummings eased away from the pack for a
two-car duel for the win. And
while they were able to separate from the field, Ashley was able to
maintain the point as he and Cummings worked through lapped traffic.
As Ashley “We got in real heavy lapped traffic one time, nobody
wanted to budge, I couldn’t get through it so I just backed off and I
said if he was going to pass me he’d have to run me on the outside and
he never attempted so it worked to our favor.” Cummings was never far behind but was unable to find an opening to move by Ashley. As the checkers waved, Cummings was less than a car length behind Ashley. “Anytime you finish within a car length of David you’re doing good. So I guess we had a good run compared to what we’ve been doing lately. Kind of getting the bugs worked out of the car finally.” Cummings, the 1998 SUPR Champion, has struggled to find the right setup in his Craig’s Automotive-powered Brown’s Trucking backed Chevrolet Monte Carlo Warrior but some recent changes appeared to have done the trick. “We tried some different things with the shock package and that’s really about it, we finally found a good baseline setup.”
Trey
Beene stayed with the lead duo early but was not as lucky with lapped
traffic and he found himself running by himself on the track, a bit behind
Ashley and Cummings but clear of the battle for fourth that was eventually
won by Curt Lipsey, who also broke free and from his challengers.
For Beene, it was his best finish of the season on the O’Reilly
SUPR Late Model tour and a strong showing in front of his hometown fans.
“We had a pretty good run, better than we’ve had for quite
sometime. The car was a little
loose getting in to the corner but overall I think we made a pretty good
comeback.” Beene was
particularly excited by the performance of his new Jay Dickens spec motor.
“I’m tickled to death with my Jay Dickens motor, it pulled all
the way, I’m very happy.” Once
Lipsey broke free and clear in fourth place, the hottest battle became a
three-way tangle between Jody Prince, Rob Litton and Kenny Merchant and
that’s the way they finished. Jon
Mitchell finished seventh while Ryan Plaisance moved up from 14th
to ninth to earn the Lloyd Wild Jr. Logging Hard Charger Award.
Doug Ingalls rounded out the top 10. 23
O’Reilly SUPR Late Models were on hand.
Rusty Cummings, Odie Green and Trey Beene topped the heat races
