Michael Herrington closes in on title as well

as he tops Pike County Sprints

McComb , Mississippi ( September 27, 2003 ) – Michael Herrington, Jr. drew even closer to his first O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car title as he patiently worked his way to the front of the pack to take his fifth victory of the season as he passed Terry Vidrine with 6 laps to go to take the win at Pike County Speedway.  Herrington waited while Shane Morgan and Michael set the early pace.  Morgan held Dupuy at bay the first dozen laps but their nights would go south with Dupuy falling out to front steering damage and Morgan fading with a broken front wing and mudded up right front.  Terry Vidrine stepped up and snagged the lead on lap 13 but it only lasted 2 laps as Herrington seized the lead on lap 15 and stormed off to the victory.

The race started with Michael Dupuy on the pole and Shane Morgan to his outside. After having the start waved off for early tangles in the field, Morgan was finally able to power to the lead riding the cushion at Pike County Speedway.  Morgan and Dupuy pulled clear of the field and appeared to be the ones to beat and through the halfway mark this proved to be true.  Unfortunately for both the race soon turned south as Dupuy broke and Morgan found his car tougher and tougher to handle with his front end problems.

That’s when current championship battlers Terry Vidrine and Michael Herrington, Jr. moved to the head of the field.  Vidrine was first to the front but his lead was short-lived with Herrington taking over just two laps later.  Vidrine held second to the checkers with Lane Whittington moving up to third at the finish.  Defending O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Champion Butch David was fourth with Willie Stafford rounding out the top 5.

16 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars were on hand with Shane Morgan and Michael Dupuy taking the heat race victories to set the stage for the feature.
