Michael Herrington clinches Sprint title with sixth victory of the season!

Jackson , Mississippi ( October 11, 2003 ) – Heading into Jackson Motor Speedway , Michael Herrington, Jr. was on the verge of clinching the 2003 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Championship.  The Prairieville, Louisiana speedster fulfilled that expectation with another dominating performance starting on the pole and leading all 25 laps to take his sixth victory of the season.  More impressively for Herrington it was his third win in the last four races and it helped secure the title with one event remaining in the season.

Herrington’s closest competitor at Jackson may well have faded from the picture before the racing action got underway as Michael Dupuy; a winner earlier in the season at Jackson Motor Speedway succumbed to motor troubles and was parked for the night following hot laps.  With Dupuy out of the picture, it was Terry Vidrine who held slim hopes of catching Herrington in the chase to the title that took up the charge.  Herington and Vidrine split the heat race victories but it was all Herrington at the drop of the green.  Vidrine held on to a solid second place but was unable to challenge Herrington for the win and with a one race remaining on the schedule now trails Herrington by 149 points with a maximum of 130 points awarded per race.

Defending O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Champion Butch David finished third and is faced with just one more chance to claim his first victory of the season.  David appears to have sorted out the SUPR spec motor package but is still a tick behind Herrington and Vidrine this season.

Shane Morgan continued his late season climb in the standings with a fourth place finish that should secure Morgan with a 4th place finish in the championship standings as he moved past an absent Harold Henderson in the standings.

Bobby Ingram made up for lost ground as his fifth place finish allowed him to move back in front of Dupuy for seventh in the championship standings.  Mark Tate made his first start of the season and recorded a sixth place finish ahead of Cary Farmer and Billy Gunter.

Al Killebrew had a hard crash in his heat race and was unable to make the call for the feature and he was joined by Michael Dupuy on the sidelines when the feature started.
