Baton
Rouge, Louisiana (October 18, 2003) – The 2003 Louisiana State
Championships wrapped up with champions being crowned in eight racing
divisions over two nights of racing. Headlining
the program were the O’Reilly SUPR Late Models and Sprint Cars and in
both cases a pair of first time winners in 2003 returned to victory lane
with Michael Dupuy claiming his fourth O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car victory
of the season and Jody Prince scoring his third O’Reilly SUPR Late Model
victory of the year. Jody
Prince, the 2003 O’Reilly SUPR Late Model America/B&K Underground
Rookie of the Year, overcame a recent string of engine problems to reel
off his second big win in the last two weeks as he backed up a victory in
the independent Spooky 50 at Fast Trax Motorplex with a big win at Baton
Rouge as he bested a field of 40 O’Reilly SUPR Late Models for the
victory. Prince made the drive
down from Sibley, Louisiana on Saturday night with one intention, righting
what had become a rough few months with his racing program bogged down by
motor demons but those problems had been resolved witness his success at
the Spooky. And sure enough,
the efforts of the folks at PTS paid off with another big win for
Prince
started the feature on the inside of row 2 and grabbed second at the start
behind B&K Underground Top Qualifier David Ashley.
Prince followed Ashley for the first 8 laps but quickly grabbed the
lead as Ashley got caught behind the lapped car of Donald Watson.
Once out front, Prince was not to be denied as he led the remaining
42 laps to take the state title. Ashley
would recover from his early race bobble to hang on to second ahead of Rob
Litton, Rodney Wing and Doug Ingalls.
Michael Dupuy’s victory also came courtesy of some early race moves as Dupuy earned the outside pole position based on some heat race moves that saw Dupuy charge from fifth to second in his heat race. Dupuy used the outside pole to launch into the lead at the drop of the green and he led all 20 laps to take the 2003 State title. Dupuy was followed at the line by pole sitter Darrell Hyde, 2003 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Champion Michael Herrington, Jr., 2002 champ Butch David and Shane Morgan.
In
preliminary action on Friday night, Dennis Duncan hauled in from In
other action Louisiana State Championship titles were handed out to Keith
Freeman in Super Stock, Todd Rogers in Street Stocks, Bo Garig in Pure
Stock, Johnny Whitehead in Cruisers and Ken Hollingsworth topped the UMP
Modifieds. O’Reilly
