Merrill takes the Pro-Cuts Texas World Dirt Track Championship

Fort Worth, Texas (March 6, 2004) – Raymond Merrill of Sallisaw, OK and Kenny Gaddis of

Hallsville etched their names in the record books Saturday night as the inaugural champions

of  the Pro-Cuts Texas World Dirt Track Championship at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt

Track.

Merrill broke away from a close early-race battle with Ronny Adams, Greenwood, LA to score

his first O'Reilly SUPR late model career victory in the 40-lap feature. Gaddis enjoyed a perfect

evening in the modified program, winning his heat, the B feature then charging from 13th

starting spot to claim the 25-lap feature. Both drivers won $2,500 for their World

Championships.

The largest crowd in the 15-year history of the O'Reilly SUPR late model series watched

Merrill and Adams swap the top spot four times in the feature's opening seven laps around the

four-tenths mile clay oval. Merrill mastered the low groove and pulled away from the field.

Series point leader Kenny Merchant, Ruston, LA, made a late charge to the front and nipped

Adams for second by inches at the checkered flag.

"It is too good to be true," shouted Merrill in victory lane. "I was going to stay in the bottom

groove until somebody got around me. If Ronny Adams would have got by me in the upper

groove, I might have gone up there to try it."

"We did not plan on running the high side but it worked out that way," said runner-up

Merchant. "We didn't expect the race to go green for so long," commented Adams following

the race. "There are some good drivers but on a big track like this it is so unusual."
