Kenny Merchant takes 30th career victory at Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge, Louisiana (March 20, 2004) – Baton Rouge Raceway presented a new challenge for the O’Reilly SUPR Late Models as the newly enlarged race track proved to be plenty fast with multiple grooves of racing but at the end of the night, one thing remained constant, Kenny Merchant in victory lane.  Merchant, the defending O’Reilly SUPR Late Model Champion from West Monroe , Louisiana claimed his second O’Reilly SUPR victory of the 2004 season as he topped a duel with Rob Litton for the win.  Merchant wheeled the J.D. Caver/Goddard Performance Keith Craft Racing Engines Ford Mustang Warrior to his 30th career victory.

The race got off to a rough start as Ronny Adams made contact with the outside wall coming off of turn four and was then collected by Jimmy Noland, Keith Mancil and newcomer James Whatley and ended up on his roof.  The red flag waved but fortunately no one was injured.  Adams crawled from the wreckage but he was faced with a heavily damaged Larry Shaw race car but one that held up where it counted, at the roll cage around Ronny.  Noland’s car will also need some major repair work to be ready to race again.

The wreck cost Garrett Durrett, the B&K Underground Top Qualifier a strong start and when the field got a complete restart, it was outside pole sitter Kenny Merchant charging to the front.  Litton who started in third also got by Durrett on the start and the battle was on between Merchant and Litton.  Litton could draw close to Merchant but was never able to get by Merchant for the lead as the race was only slowed by one other caution, that being on lap 25 when Bobby Russell spun in front of third place runner Ryan Plaisance.  Also collected were the fifth place car of Jay Blair and the sixth running Durrett.  Russell and Durrett continued on but Plaisance and Blair were out of the race.

Merchant held off Litton over the final 15 laps but the battle for position was focused on third as Kevin Watts finally topped a multi-lap duel with David Ashley for the position.  Ashley held on to fourth with leading B&K Underground/Late Model America Rookie of the Year contender Ray Moore recording another solid finish in fifth.

24 O’Reilly SUPR Late Models were on hand.  Jay Blair, Ray Moore and Garrett Durrett topped the heat races with Doug Ingalls winning the last chance race.  Ingalls’ victory proved to be costly as he bent a valve and he was the first car out in the feature.  Jason Polite started 23rd and finished 10th to earn the Creel Brothers Hard Charger Award.
