McDowell tops Adams for Lone Star night 1 victory!
By
Brian Dunlap The World of Outlaw Late Model series traveled to Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas Friday night for heart-stopping, mud-slinging night of action. It was series points leader Dale McDowell that was able to emerge from the race with his second series win of the 2004 season.
McDowell proved he was the man to beat when he took the lead with his Larry Shaw Racetek engines Pontiac coming off of turn four at the start of the race and led every lap their after. “We had a little luck in the draw and started up front in the dash, which left us with a good starting position in the feature and we were able to pull it off” stated McDowell. With regards to his points lead McDowell remarked “We are leading the series points by slim margin against some tough competition so every race and every win counts.”
Starting on the pole, Ronny Adams brought the field around to take the green flag followed by McDowell, Darrell Lanigan, Steve Francis, Scott Bloomquist, Bart Hartman, and the rest of the 25 car starting lineup.
On lap 2 Bloomquist was able to run his car low in to turn 2 making a move on and taking forth position away from Darrell Lanigan. By lap 3 McDowell had began to open up a significant 10 car lead as Bloomquist began pressuring Francis for third position. By lap 10 McDowell had worked his way up and to the lap traffic of Rick Aukland, he was unphased as he was able to pass Aukland and maintain his lead. McDowell was soon able to pull away from the field and build a straightaway lead by lap 15.
Going in to lap 16, Francis, Bloomquist, and Lanigan hand began to close in on Adams. By lap 20, the four cars were racing nose to tail looking for any opportunity to pass each other. Francis began to apply serious pressure to Adams, challenging him for second position.
Lap 26 brought out the caution flag do to Duke Whiseant’s car stopping on the race track. When the Lone Star Speedway flagman dropped the green flag McDowell once again jumped out and pulled away from the field building a 6 car length lead over Adams.
Bloomquist
began to put the heat on Francis, challenging him for third position,
trying high and low to get around him. With Bloomquist hot on his heals,
Francis was unable to challenge Adams for second. McDowell
crossed the finish line with ¾ straight away lead, and collected a check
