Butch David makes big return to victory lane at Pike County!

McComb, Mississippi (May 29, 2004) – Butch David the inaugural O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Champion finally got the monkey off his back with his first victory since his championship season in 2002 at Pike County Speedway.  David chased down and passed 2003 Champion Mike Herrington, Jr. with two laps to go to take the win and in the process added to his lead in the battle for the 2004 crown.

The battle between David and Herrington started right from the drop of the green with Herrington winning the initial battle when the field came around for a full restart following a pair of lap one accidents that sent two cars into a roll, Harold Henderson on the front stretch and Wesley Young on the backstretch.  Both cars were finished for the night.  David and Herrington were fortunate to be just clear of the Henderson tumble that occurred as he and last race winner Terry Vidrine were racing for third.

Herrington grabbed the lead at the start and his was able to keep David at bay for most the race but David was able to mount a late charge and he took the lead with one lap to go to take his first win of the season in the Cavin’s Auto Repair/Trailer World/Tommy Garrett Racing Engines Gambler.

Herrington, with his second place finish has now moved up to third in points but he continues to trail the impressively consistent David by over 100 points as Davis has now recorded one victory, three second place finishes and a third place finish in five races.  Herrington leads the pack with two wins but is still being hindered by a wreck induced 20th place finish at the season opener.

Moving up to second in the 2004 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car standings is Shane Morgan who recorded another solid finish with a third while Michael Dupuy continued to impress at the wheel of Bobby Ingram’s sprinter coming home in fourth.  Leading Wynn’s/J.D. Byrider Rookie of the Year contender Cassidy Lejeune rounded out the top 5.

A series high of 26 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars were on hand for the race with Harold Henderson, David and Herrington topping the heat races while Lane Whittington topped the last chance race.
