Herrington better late than never in winning O'Reilly SUPR Sprints at Jackson!
Jackson, Mississippi (July 10, 2004) – Michael Herrington chased Terry Vidrine all night long at Jackson Motor Speedway and he finally caught him on the last lap, making the winning pass in turns 3 and 4 of the final lap to take the O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car win, Herrington’s third of the season. Herrington finished second to Vidrine in the third heat race and appeared to be set for a second place finish in the feature but a lap 20 caution closed the field up and Vidrine seemed to slow just a step during the last five laps and Herrington closed in for one final chase. Vidrine encountered lapped traffic and Herrington jumped to the bottom of turn three to race into the lead on the final lap. Vidrine started the feature from the pole position and alongside him was Lincoln Gatwood. Vidrine won the battle into turn one while trouble brewed in the back of the pack as a multi-car tangle collected Chris Buhler, Cary Farmer and Rusty Sanford. All cars would continue but the same could not be said for Seavy Clemmons who flipped his sprinter while trying to dodge the pile up. The action continued on the restart as once again a sprinter went topside with Lane Whittington taking the ride this time. The racing finally settled down and it was Vidrine in the lead followed by Gatwood and Herrington stalking in third. Herrington would work his way past Gatwood but again that appeared to be the pass for the runner-up position until the final late race charged netted Herrington his third victory of the season and moved Herrington to within 89 points of championship leader Butch David. Shane Morgan continues to maintain his hold on second place in the championship battle as he recorded a top three finish again and he now trails David by just 68 points. David finished outside of the top three for the first time this season but it wasn’t by much as he finished fourth just behind Morgan. Lincoln Gatwood, in his first O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car start of the season recorded a solid top five finish. Mark Tate recorded one of his strongest finishes in sprint competition in sixth ahead of first-time competitor Joey Pilgrim, running in the #10 team car of Shane Morgan. Cary Farmer finished in eight ahead of the highest finishing Wynn’s/J.D. Byrider rookie of the year competitor Jerry Aguillard. Harold Henderson survived an overheating motor to secure 10th. 18 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars were on hand. Lane Whittington, Shane Morgan and Terry Vidrine topped the heat races. Glynn LeBlanc recovered from a heat race flip and returned to finish 13th in the feature. O’Reilly SUPR Sprints: 1. Michael Herrington 2. Terry Vidrine 3. Shane Morgan 4. Butch David 5.
