Shane Morgan takes big O'Reilly SUPR Sprint victory at Pike County

McComb, Mississippi (September 4, 2004) – Shane Morgan has quietly put together a championship contending season and tonight he ended the silence winning his first O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car feature of the season at Pike County Speedway. Morgan entered tonight’s race just 22 points behind Butch David in the battle for the 2004 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Championship and yet he earned his spot due to top 5 finishes not victories. That changed tonight when Morgan drove by early race leader Michael Dupuy on lap seven and never looked back storming to the victory ahead of his closest rivals in the battle for the championship with Michael Herrington finishing second and Butch David coming home third.

Morgan started fourth but quickly moved into striking position as he was running second to Dupuy, who started on the outside pole, by the end of the first lap. Morgan kept the pressure on and caught and slid past Dupuy in turn one on lap seven to take over the lead. Dupuy stayed close to Morgan but eventually he faded from contention, exiting the track on lap 14 due to throttle linkage problems. And while Dupuy dropped out, Morgan still had his hands full with his rivals for the 2004 title with Herrington and David battling for second. Morgan’s cause was aided by the long stretch of green flag racing as the race went caution free until lap 23, when Billy Gunter slowed with a wounded motor. Morgan held Herrington and David at bay to take the win.

Wendell Magnon continues to impress with a top five finish for the second time in as many weeks. Harold Henderson finish fifth followed by top rookie finisher Seavy Clemmons, Cary Farmer, Mark Tate, Jerry Aguillard and Joey Pilgrim rounded out the top ten.

15 O’Reilly SUPR Sprints were on hand with Michael Herrington and Butch David kicking off the night by winning the heat races.
