Shane Morgan doubles up in Deep South Sprint debut!

Shane Morgan hot laps prior to races, motor problems would force him to switch cars for the remainder of the night

Loxley, Alabama (September 11, 2004) – Shane Morgan doubled up with his second victory in as many weeks on the O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car circuit at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Alabama.  Morgan’s night started off on a sour note, a sour engine note that is, as the motor in his primary car started going south so he was forced into his back-up and he relinquished his front row starting spot in his heat race in the process but none of that mattered.  Morgan overcame the loss of his front row starting spot and finished third in his heat race and then started fifth in the feature.

Morgan then jumped behind the wheel of Joey Pilgrim's car and took the big win

During the early stages it didn’t appear to be Morgan's night as heat race winners Michael Herrington and Willie Stauffer battle up front for the lead with Herrington up front but Stauffer constantly challenging him for the top spot.  Morgan was fourth behind Butch David and stayed there for the first ten laps and that’s about the time his tires came around and the charge began.  Morgan took third from David on lap 10 and then moved to second on lap 12.  Morgan then set his eyes on Herrington and after tracking him for three or four laps he moved in for the lead racing past Herrington off of turn two on lap 17.

Morgan would lead the remaining laps to take the win but even that wasn’t too easy as lapped traffic allowed Herrington and David to draw in close with Herrington making one last charge on Morgan off of turn two with a lap to go but Morgan was able to hold him off and take the victory.  The win was all the more important as Morgan has closed to within four points of third place finisher Butch David in the battle for the 2004 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Championship.  Still David, down to his spare motor and fighting to hold on to the point lead he’s held for much of the year isn’t going down without a fight and despite his recent struggles, continues to lead the title chase with just four races to go.

Terry Vidrine, haunted by fuel pick-up problems for several weeks and as recently as his heat race tonight, finally got his car to run correctly and he recorded a solid fourth ahead of the first of two Jacksonville, Florida area competitors, Tighe Schloss.  Seavy Clemmons finished sixth with Otto Scrape, Wendell Magnon, Jerry Aguillard and Mark Roth rounding out the top 10.  The 25-lap feature race went caution free on the big 4/10th mile oval.

Willie Stauffer and Michael Herrington topped the heat races.
