David Ashley scores an emotional victory in the Longhorn Rumble!

Baytown, Texas (September 11, 2004) – David Ashley scored an emotional victory and dedicated the win to his ailing mother Maxie as he dominated the action starting from the pole and leading all 50 laps of the 3rd Annual Longhorn Rumble for the O’Reilly SUPR Late Models at Houston Raceway Park.  Ashley decision to run the Longhorn Rumble was a last minute decision but he was able to put together his notes from previous races and he unloaded a car that was good right off the trailer.

Ashley earned the B&K Underground Top Qualifier award as he topped the third heat race and he used it to full advantage building up a big lead to take the win, his fourth O’Reilly SUPR Late Model victory of the season.  Ashley’s decision to race proved to be an uplifting decision as Ashley relished the kind heart and support offered by his fellow racers more than the victory.  “I just want to thank the racers for all of the support offered, the win wasn’t as important to me as the support I’ve received.  I also want to thank my brother Rohn, Dustin Westmoreland and my wife Carla and her sister Carmine for traveling with me this weekend.”

And while Ashley was on the point from the drop of the green, he didn’t go unchallenged as Jay Blair, winner of the very first Longhorn Rumble, showed he also knew his way around the HRP oval, making a late charge to challenge Ashley for the win.  Ashley held off Blair despite contact with an infield tire with less than ten laps to go.

Kenny Merchant would finish third and he was followed by longtime Houston area competitor, Howard Willis in his first Late Model start of the season.  Chris Wall rounded out the top five followed by Rob Litton, Ray Moore and the last car on the lead lap Doug Ingalls in eight.  Ingalls made the feature by winning the last chance race and then passed nine cars to move up to eight at the checkers.  Another local competitor James Whatley earned the Creel Brothers Hard Charger award as he started 19th and finished ninth.

25 O’Reilly SUPR Late Models were on hand for the 3rd Annual Longhorn Rumble.  Rob Litton, Ray Moore, David Ashley and Marlon Wild topped the heat races.
