Boen, Henigan Elated With Pro-Cuts Texas World Championships!

FORT WORTH-DALLAS (March 5, 2005) - Colorado's Kelly Boen and Texan Chris Henigan scored enthusiastic and popular Pro-Cuts Texas World Dirt Track Championship victories Saturday night at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.  The weekend was the largest in event history.

Boen pushed his unsponsored late model from the 17th starting position to overtake David Ashley with four laps remaining enroute to the 40-lap O'Reilly SUPR late model feature victory.  Henigan earned his second career triumph at the Dirt Track in his Career Search/Marshall Lube & Auto modified.  Boen's triumph was worth $3,000 while Henigan collected $2,500.

NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series star Ken Schrader broke out of a recent dirt track slump and placed sixth in the O'Reilly SUPR Late Model Series feature.  He was forced out on the opening lap of Friday evening's feature with front end and steering damage.

"We just missed tonight on tires," said Schrader following the feature.  "The track was a little hard due to the weather, one end was a little different than the other.  We just missed it a little tonight.  But we haven't finished a (dirt) race in a couple of weeks so this is better."

Boen had to borrow a truck and trailer for the trip from Colorado to the Lone Star State and arrived Friday after the opening program had begun.  He won the last chance race Saturday just to make it into the feature field.  Boen cut through the late model feature field efficiently and was just 1.43 seconds behind former series champion David Ashley with ten laps remaining around the four-tenths mile clay oval.

Boen moved under Ashley in the first turn on lap 37 but the Louisiana veteran returned to the front seconds later.  By the time the duo reached the start-finish line, Boen had the lead for good.  He finished 0.97 seconds ahead of Ashley in the Thornhill Wrecker/Wall to Wall Motorsports with 2003 SUPR champ Kenny Merchant third in the J.D. Carver Co. machine.

"David (Ashley) is a great racer and a great guy," said the winner in Victory Lane.  "The (late) yellow gave us a chance, I knew I had to do something after the restart.  I rolled under him, the car hopped a bit and I just hung on until I saw the checkered flag fly.  We had to borrow a ride to get down here.  I don't have a truck and trailer to do much traveling.

"If you take the best track and times it by five, it wouldn't be half of what this place is."

Henigan followed up on a 2003 Dirt Track modified victory with a race that he led for all but two laps.  Henigan pulled away from a midrace battle with John Whittington to post a 4.94-second margin of victory.

"This is the greatest!" screamed Henigan while celebrating in Victory Lane.  "145 cars are here and we are in Victory Lane!

"The key to winning was being patient and running the bottom," continued Henigan.  "We had bad restarts and they could get me on the high side.  We heated up the tires and got loose from the pack."

Whittington withstood a furious challenge from a trio of cars to take second ahead of Howard Willis.  Willis fought off bronchitis all weekend and required oxygen in the pits from the medical crew just in order to start the main event.  Willis took the green from 17th position after moving through the C and B features to qualify for the feature.

The 62 late models and 145 modifieds that competed during the weekend produced tremendous competition.  Modified drivers Jody Mayne and Troy Taylor moved from the H feature to the main event, finishing 12th and 17th respectively.  Both drivers competed in eight feature races Saturday.

Speedway officials announced that the 2006 event will also be staged the first weekend of March.
