Jeff Floyd doubles up at Memphis!

Memphis, Tennessee (May 13, 2005) – Jeff Floyd played a hunch and it paid off as he won he second race in as many weeks at Memphis Motorsports Park, this time topping the O’Reilly SUPR Late Models on their only visit of the year.  Floyd was originally going to forgo the race but elected to attend when he realized that the race was being held of Friday the 13th.  Seems the last time he raced on Friday the 13th he won, make it two-in-a-row.

Jeff Floyd started on the pole in the Stamp Out Smoking/Floyd’s Body Shop/JFR Graphics Kuntz & Co. powered GRT and overcame an early advantage by outside pole sitter Dewaine Hottinger taking the lead on lap three and leading the remaining 37 laps to take the win, his first in O’Reilly SUPR competition.  Floyd was able to control the pace out front as Hottinger held steady in second despite constant pressure from Billy James.  Hottinger fought the setup; most notably as he exited turn two slipping and sliding on the fast, tacky and tight Memphis quarter mile.  But despite the slippage, Hottinger was a lap away from claiming a solid runner-up finish, only to slow prematurely for a checkered flag that had not yet waved.  Hottinger quickly realized his error when he looked up at the scoreboard and saw 39 laps complete and he hustled to get back up to spend and only lost two positions in the process.

Billy James, who pulled down from Sikeston , Missouri to sample a little O’Reilly SUPR competition found that his efforts to get to the front paid off at Hottinger’s expense.  Also benefiting from Hottinger’s slip was David Ashley, who retook the 2005 O’Reilly SUPR Late Model Championship point lead in the process by finishing third.  Ashley was the first spec motor car to cross the line as the fast racing surface seemed to favor the open motor package on this night.  Hottinger would finish fourth with rookie SUPR competitor Robbie Stuart recording one of his strongest finishes of the year in fifth.

25 O’Reilly SUPR Late Models were on hand at Memphis Motorsports Park .  The night started with Jeff Floyd winning the opening heat race and earning the B&K Underground Top Qualifier award in the process.  Robbie Stuart, Dewaine Hottinger and Jamie Dacus won the remaining heat races with Bubba Mullins posting the last chance victory.  Garrett Durrett made a late race pass on Dean Carpenter to claim the final transfer spot and he just kept on passing cars, moving from 20th to sixth in the feature to claim the Creel Brothers Hard Charger Award.
