Frye leaves nothing to chance at I-30!

Little Rock, Arkansas (May 14, 2005) – Bill Frye left I-30 Speedway frustrated last time the O’Reilly SUPR Late Models visited, this time he left nothing to chance leading all 40-laps to take the victory.  Frye was battling for the lead in April when he tangled with a slowing lapped car but tonight he made sure he had room to run, placing his Kuntz & Co./Petroff Towing/Tortillas’s Mexican Restaurant Ford Mustang GRT out front at the drop of the green and he kept it there all night, despite Wendell Wallace’s best efforts to displace him at the front.

It turned out to be a classic spec motor vs. open motor battle with Frye able to build momentum off the corners with his Kuntz & Co. Ford spec motor while Wallace was able to charge in hard into the corners to close ground.  Frye and Wallace separated themselves from the rest of the field through the middle stages but as the laps wound down, lapped traffic made for a close battle right to the checkers with Jack Sullivan closing in late to join the battle but he had to settle for third ahead of a good battle for fourth between Lee Davis and Kenny Merchant.

The race went 17th laps before the first caution waved and by this time Frye and Wallace had lapped five cars, placing a cushion between them and Jack Sullivan who had moved from his eight starting spot to third in just five laps.  As the field restarted the action heated up between Bubba Mullins and Lee Davis as they battled for fourth.  Lap 20 would see that battle end with Bubba Mullins spinning following contact with Davis and Mullins was forced to restart on the rear.  The remainder of the race would go caution free with Frye holding off Wallace despite increasingly heavy lapped traffic.  Sullivan closed in on the lead duo but ran out of time to challenge for the lead.  Davis held on to fourth ahead of Merchant, who had climbed from his 12th starting position.  Rookie contender Robbie Stuart recorded another solid finish this weekend with a sixth ahead of Jody Prince, Jon Mitchell, David Ashley and Jason Ingalls.

28 O’Reilly SUPR Late Models were on hand.  Wendell Wallace won the opening heat race and claimed the B&K Underground Top Qualifier award in the process.  Bill Frye, Bubba Mullins and Ronny Adams claimed the remaining heat race wins with Doug Ingalls winning the last chance race.  Jon Mitchell started dead last in the feature and passed 14 cars to claim 8th in the final run down.  This performance earned Mitchell the Creel Brothers Hard Charger award.
