Bubba Mullins takes first win of the season at Champion Park!

Haughton, Louisiana (September 3, 2005) – Bubba Mullins started on the pole in his Southwest Express Chevrolet Monte Carlo Warrior loss the lead on the start and then battled by early leader Ronny Adams to take his first O’Reilly SUPR Late Model victory of the season.  Mullins worked the bottom while Adams carried his momentum from a low entry to a high exit using the cushion to roar down the straightaways.  This tactic worked for Adams until a slight slip allowed Mullins to pull along even with Adams.  Mullins was able to take the lead form good as the pair raced down the backstretch on lap 33.  Mullins built a slight but Adams closed back in as the race drew to a conclusion.

Mullins summed up the win with a typical modest boast, “I got to take them when I can get ‘em.”  The win was clearly overdue for the West Monroe, Louisiana veteran who has raced with moderate support for several years before connecting with Kerry Morris with Southwest Express late last year.  Morris a long time supporter of sprinter Gary Wright came in and has made the difference for Mullins.  “I can’t say enough about him.  Anything I need he helps me get.”  But Mullins also put the spotlight of some of his other supporters as well including longtime sponsors Wye Electric and Shelton Automotive as well as FSR Racing Products and Keith Craft.

Mullins, a long time Warrior proponent tried a MasterSbilt chassis for a half dozen races but soon returned to his Warrior and it paid off with increased performance including a runner up finish at Thunder Valley at the end of July.  But while Mullins was peaking Adams had already visited victory lane this season at Champion Park and the duel for the lead was as tough as expected with such a show down.

Mullins earned the B& K Underground Top Qualifier award based on passing points as he finished third in the fourth heat race one position behind the car he would battle all night, Ronny Adams.  Ryan Plaisance who left his home last Sunday, August 28th to escape the pending destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina and spent the week with Kenny Merchant and his family started off the night by winning heat one.  Father and son Bert and Jeff Chanler won heats two and three respectively while Jody Prince won the fourth.

Jason Ingalls won the last chance race and started 17th in the feature.  Ingalls would charge through the field to finish a solid third and he earned the Creel Brothers Hard Charger award for his efforts.

27 O’Reilly SUPR Late Models were on hand.
