Rob Litton rounds up the competition at Houston!
Baytown, Texas (September 10, 2005) – Finding a ray of hope in what has been deemed “an unlucky year” defending O’Reilly SUPR Late Model Champion Rob Litton claimed his first win of the season taking the lead at the halfway mark and pulling away to claim the 4th Annual Longhorn Rumble at Houston Raceway Park. Litton driving for Kim Johnson for the first time passed early race leader Ray Moore to take the win, his first O’Reilly SUPR victory of the season. Ray Moore would hold on to second with Ronny Adams recovering from a heat race wreck to charge from 19th to third at the checkers. Litton was actually driving one of his old cars, a car he sold to Kim Johnson this year. But this sale had a catch, Johnson would buy the car but only if Litton would agree to drive it for him. But while the debut was successful, Johnson wasn’t on hand. He’s in Iraq where he’s a contractor aiding in the rebuilding of the country. The race started with Ray Moore on the pole as the B&K Underground Top Qualifier. David Ashley recovered from a rough Labor Day weekend that saw his once dominant point lead trimmed to just 83 points over Kenny Merchant to start alongside of Moore. The two would battle side-by-side for the first 10 plus laps with Moore maintaining a slim lead over Ashley who kept working to Moore’s outside. As the race progressed, Moore was able to extend his lead over Ashley with Litton having moved into third at this point. Litton admitted that the front two were leaving him behind at this stage but “I was confident in the car, I could feel it getting faster.” As his tires began to warm up the track came to Litton. It took Litton several laps to work his way around Ashley for second and he then reeled in Moore and made the pass on the outside for the lead. Moore hung tough and maintained second to the checkers, holding off the Creel Brothers Hard Charger Ronny Adams. Lee Davis moved by David Ashley to claim fourth but Ashley’s fifth place finish coupled with Kenny Merchant’s early exit allowed Ashley some breathing room in the battle for the 2005 O’Reilly SUPR Championship as Ashley now leads Merchant by 149 points. Allen Tippen, Robbie Stuart, Jason Ingalls, Jody Prince and Patrik Daniel rounded out the top ten. 21 O’Reilly SUPR Late Models were on hand. David Ashley, Jason Ingalls and Ray Moore claimed the heat races wins. Official Results: 1. Rob Litton 2. Ray Moore 3. Ronny Adams 4. Lee Davis 5. David Ashley 6. Allen Tippen 7. Robbie Stuart 8.
