Shane Morgan holds off competition to take Deep South
O'Reilly SUPR Sprints victory!

Loxley, Alabama (October 1, 2005) – Shane Morgan led 39 laps in the O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car feature at Deep South Speedway but as he took the one to go sign he hand Lane Whittington in hot pursuit and lapped traffic to negotiate.  Morgan was up to the task taking one of the closest finishes of the season, overcoming a turn four slide job from Whittington to take the win.  Morgan, who hails from Gulfport , Mississippi , was racing through shear determination and a little fortune as he was running his sprinter that survived a flooded race shop on stilts, the car high enough off the ground to be safe from the rising waters caused by Hurricane Katrina.  Still, with a flooded race shop, Morgan and his crew had little time to concentrate on setting up the Cumberland Motorsports sprinter for Deep South .

Morgan did have one thing working in his favor; he’s won before at Deep South , taking a big win in the fall of 2004 as he chased Michael Herrington for the 2004 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car title, a race won by Herrington.  Also, Morgan entered the race with more momentum as he had just clinched the Cajun Sprinters Championship in 2005 and was looking to build on that momentum with his injector program.  His night started off strong with a win in heat race two to earn the pole for the feature.  On his outside would be heat one winner Michael Herrington.

Herrington is the two-time defending O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car Champion and he would be a formidable opponent but on this night Morgan was on his game taking the lead from the start.  And he held the lead throughout the feature fending off Whittington’s last lap challenge as well as the challenge from Willie Stauffer, winner of the last O’Reilly SUPR Sprint event held at Deep South .  Stauffer finished a close third ahead of Terry Vidrine, Seavy Clemmons, Herrington, Mark Roth, Harold Henderson, Larry Todd and Nick Gleber.  Attrition eliminated Paul Gleber Timmy Trash and Rod Craddock prior to the start of the feature as the big Alabama dirt oval proved to be tough on motors.

Terry Vidrine’s fourth place finish allowed Vidrine to creep closer to Michael Herrington in the battle for the 2005 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car title with one race remaining on the schedule.  Herrington leads Vidrine by 36 points.
