Patrik Daniel and Gary Watson do a Texas Two-Step Sweep at the Louisiana State Championships!

Baton Rouge, Louisiana (November 12, 2005) – The 2005 Louisiana State Championships had a distinct Texas flavor tonight as 2005 O’Reilly SUPR Late Model Rookie of the Year Patrik Daniel from Willis Point and Gary Watson, co-promoter of Motorama Raceway in Beaumont and Sprint Car competitor claimed the La. State titles at Baton Rouge Raceway.

Daniel started sixth in the feature but moved up to fourth following a lap one caution that saw second row starters Robbie Stuart and Heath Oestricher spin and restart on the rear.  A second start was also slowed by then Daniel had picked his preferred line and he was second by the end of lap one.  Daniel followed Jimmy Noland for 19 laps before taking the lead and held off a late charge by David Ashley to claim his first O’Reilly SUPR Late Model victory.  “In my mind this has been pretty much a perfect season.  Afterward, Daniel reflected on his season, “the fact that we won a race and won a (rookie of the year) our first year out, that’s pretty good.”

For Watson it also a case of working his way to the front as moved to third early in the race and then he caught the leading duo of Michael Herrington and Shane Morgan before the midway mark.  Watson worked by Morgan and as the battle for the lead rolled through turn four amid lapped traffic, Watson and Herrington touched tires and Herrington went into a violent flip collecting Morgan in the process.  Herrington and Morgan would emerge okay despite their torn up race cars and Watson would power away from the field to take his first O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car victory ahead of Lane Whittington and Jimmy Brooks.

Despite the early end to his night, Michael Herrington clinched the 2005 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Car title as Terry Vidrine fell on spot shy of catching Herrington in the championship battle.  This marked the third straight title for the Prairieville, Louisiana sprinter.

David Ashley clinched the O’Reilly SUPR Late Model Championship two weeks ago with a victory at Deep South Speedway.

19 O’Reilly SUPR Sprint Cars and 27 O’Reilly SUPR Late Models were on hand.  Jay Blair won the Friday night Late Model feature over Ray Moore.
