Meridian, Mississippi (June
9, 2006) – The O’Reilly SUPR Late Models visited Whynot
Motorsports Park for the first time under the banner of
former SUPR Champion Rodney Wing and it was only fitting
that another former SUPR Champion found his way to
victory lane as 1999 & 2005 champion David Ashley topped
2003 SUPR Champ Kenny Merchant and 7-time Mississippi
State Champion Mike Boland to take the win in the SUPR
vs. MSCCS Challenge. The win tonight was Ashley’s third
in the last five SUPR races.
Ashley deemed the night
“unbelievable”. Ashley added that much of the credit
goes to Whynot owner Rodney Wing. “Rodney did a great
job on his facility; I have to give that to him.”
David’s B&K
Underground-backed GRT was fast all night. “We unloaded
and we were fast right away. We have definitely stepped
up our program, it’s not where it needs to be but we’re
getting better.” Things started with Ashley setting
fast time in qualifying to earn the B&K Underground
dollars from his car owner Billy McDonald and it
continued right into the feature where Ashley led just
about every lap but the first one.
Ashley started on the pole
after setting fast time and he was joined on the front
row by Kenny Merchant. Merchant would grab the lead in
the early stages with Ashley following in second with
Marlon Wild and Chris Wall close behind. Merchant’s
time up front would be short-lived as Ashley would grab
the lead and he was soon followed by Chris Wall who
moved into second ahead of Merchant and Neil Baggett.
Ashley would continue to set
the pace up front with Mike Boland joining the fray
after starting 15th, the Cuba, Alabama pilot
was up to fourth by lap 15. The top four would remain
the same until a final caution waved with seven laps to
go. At this point, Ashley, who had been challenged by
Chris Wall for several laps got up on the wheel and
pulled away to a big lead over Merchant, Boland, Baggett
and Bub McCool with Chris Wall fading to sixth at the
checkers with battery problems.
The race was slowed for
several cautions as the drivers sorted out the Whynot
racing surface that proved to be plenty racy with three
distinct racing lines.
35 O’Reilly SUPR and
Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series
competitors were on hand. David Ashley set fast time at
13.639 around the quarter mile with Jay Blair and David
Breazeale topping the 2 b-mains to set the 24-car
field.
